Saw a
box of strawberries lying in my fridge, got tempted to try something with those
luscious berries, and finally ended up making strawberry jam with apple and
raisins.
I am very fond of jams, marmalade preserves etc.
But since I stopped stocking store bought items at home, jam bottles were one of
the casualties.
When
you buy jams and preserves from store they tend to have lot of sugar, plus
artificial color and preservatives, so this is my attempt at making my jam with
less sugar and no color or preservatives. This jam won't last you for long time
(approx... 10-15 days in refrigerator) it is basically a refrigerator jam, so
my suggestion is to make it in small batches.
First
of all take strawberries and chop them in big chunks because I like big strawberry
pieces in my jam, but big or small pieces it’s your choice.
Peel
and grate one apple (any sweet variety of apple will do). Take half a cup of
golden raisins. I have used raisins and apple more for its sweetness than its flavor, after being cooked with strawberries even the raisins will
take on its flavor.
Put all
ingredients including sugar and lemon juice in a heavy bottom pan and cook till
it thickens. If you are not too sure about the consistency and find that after
cooling jam is still runny, no hassles just heat it up again till it thickens
more. Store in a glass jar when it cools down.
Ingredients
2 and
3/4 cup chopped strawberry
1 and
1/2 cup grated Apple (I took one whole Fuji apple)
1/2 cup
raisins
1/8 cup lemon juice
3/4 cup
sugar (I used raw sugar)
Method
2) Wash
peel and grate your apple. Sprinkle some of the lemon juice onto grated apples
so they don’t turn black.
.
3) Take
out your raisins and wash them with lukewarm water while rubbing with your
fingers and drain. (It’s an optional step)
4) Take
a heavy bottom pan and put your chopped strawberries, grated apples, raisins, remaining
lemon juice and sugar in it.
5) Switch
on the gas, give everything a mix with a spoon and when it starts to bubble,
reduce the heat. Let it simmer on a low heat for about 10 to 15 minutes or till
thickens and reaches a jam like consistency.
NOTE:
This
recipe should give you around 250 grams of jam.
